The UBC Okanagan Heat men’s soccer team played a strong defensive game versus the home Langara Falcons, fighting back in the second half to come away with a 1-1 draw in their first road game of the season on Saturday, Sep. 15.
“We played fairly well,” observed captain and fifth year defender Dustin Luck (Kelowna, BC). “We were down 1-0 and showed some fight by coming back in the second half. Overall it was a decent performance.”
Both teams were unable to score in the first half.
The Falcons were able to get the jump on the Heat early in the second when Langara’s Valery Romanchik (2nd year, Abbotsford, BC) broke the scoreless game, beating Heat keeper Logan Ellis (1st year, Calgary, AB).
Fifth year forward Zach Donaldson-Hall (Kamloops, BC) broke free in the 75th minute and netted his first of the season to tie the game at one. Both teams pushed for the go ahead marker, but the defenses held for the remaining minutes.
“Definitely some bright spots today and good play to build on for tomorrow and the rest of the season,” added Luck as he prepares for the Heat’s second road game tomorrow.
This tie puts the Heat’s record at (0W-1L-2T), as the Okanagan team will try and notch their first win of the season on Sunday Sep. 16 in Squamish, B.C., versus the home Quest University Kermodes. The Kermodes lost to Thompson Rivers (2-0) today and are winless on the season with a record of (0W-2L-1T). Sunday’s game will kick off at 2 p.m.
Langara improves to (1W-1L-1T) and will host the Thompson Rivers WolfPack at BCIT at 3:30 p.m.
