Heat fall in five set heartbreaker
Looking for their first win of the season, the Heat jumped on the defending national champions taking the first two sets. The combination of Trinity experience and UBC Okanagan inexperience allowed the favoured Spartans to quell the upset and win in five sets on Sunday afternoon in Kelowna, 3-2 (20-25, 22-25, 25-19, 25-13, 15-09).
The tightly contested match featured nine lead changes and 24 tie scores, with neither the Spartans nor the underdog Heat willing to back down. Service errors proved to be the Heat’s downfall as they had 16 to the Spartans’ eight.
Spartans exact revenge on Heat
Neither the home Heat nor the visiting Spartans could get into rhythm in their Sunday afternoon women’s volleyball matchup, but the No. 1 ranked Trinity Western Spartans were able to exact revenge for their Saturday loss, upending the home team in four sets 3-1 (25-18, 12-25, 25-13, 25-23).
“We were right in there,” commented Heat head coach Steve Manuel. “They played very well today; we didn't play nearly as tenacious as we did the day before and we can't afford to do that.”
Defense not enough to earn win over Winnipeg
The UBC Okanagan men's basketball team played a strong defensive game, holding the normally high-scoring Winnipeg Wesmen to just 58 points, but they still fell to the home team 58-51 Sunday afternoon in Canada West men’s basketball league play.
The Heat were led by rookie guard Mitch Goodwin's 14 points and seven rebounds. Fellow rookie guard Greet Gill (Osoyoos, BC) added 12, and third year guard Anwar Faza (Ottawa, ON) finished with 11.
