KELOWNA, BC - In the second PACWEST tournament of the year, hosted at the Okanagan Golf Club, the University of Fraser Valley's Darren Whitehouse torched the field, shooting 66 on both days to finish as the top individual (132) and to help the Cascades capture their second team title in as many weekends.
On the Heat side of things, Will Deck continued his strong play to open the season. Deck shot a combined total of 141 over the two day tournament to help his team capture third in tournament. Third-year Cody Bell (Salmon Arm, BC) struggled in the front nine on the second day, but used the back nine to recover and finish with a 74 on the day. He would finish with a combined total of 145. Talon Moore (2nd year, Vancouver, BC) would finish the tournament at 148 strokes, while Harvey Hubball (5th year, Bowen Island, BC) rounded out the group, shooting 154 over the tournament.
"The weekend was...acceptable," paused Will Deck (4th year, Kelowna, BC) following the tournament. "There's still room for improvement though. It wasn't the best weekend in terms of ball striking, but the putter was really good and kept me in a lot of holes."
As for the ladies from UBC Okanagan, rookies Carolyn Lee (Calgary, AB) and Kelsey McGillis (Calgary, AB) put in strong showings in the second tournament of their collegiate careers. Lee would finish the tournament at 161 strokes, while McGillis finished with a two-day total of 203. The ladies from the University of Fraser Valley, like their male counterparts, would end up capturing the team title for the weekend. Jen Woods, as she did last weekend in Parksville, BC, would finish as the top female in the tournament, posting a two-day total of 152 on her old home course.
"We really just need to improve on our ability to shoot mid-range 70s," added Deck. "We need everyone playing well if we're going to take out teams like UFV."
The Heat will have to wait two weeks before they get another crack as UFV, as the next weekend (September 21st and 22nd) is a bye in the PACWEST. However, the season resumes September 28th and 29th, with the Camosun Chargers playing host at Bear Mountain Golf Course in Victoria, BC.
