Student-athletes are selected as an All-Canadian based on their performance and their contribution to their sport and their team, and Will Deck, a fourth year golfer from Kelowna, was among the 10 golfers across the nation to receive the award.
To earn the award Deck played remarkably consistent this past year, and over the course of his four years on the UBC Okanagan Heat men’s golf team, and his steady play earned him Player of the Year in the PACWEST as the low total score of 425 was the best among all male golfers. The lefty-swinging human kinetics student finished first, third, and 11th in the three 2013 PACWEST tourneys leading his Heat team to a third place finish.
In previous years Deck has been a two-time PACWEST all-star and has finished as high as seventh, as an individual, at the 2012 PING CCAA national championships.
Will has been a standout student-athlete for the Heat in his four years at UBC’s Okanagan campus and has taken part in many community outreach activities as a part of a team on campus. One of the biggest events that Will has been involved in the past few years is the Wendy’s DreamLift Day, where the athletes work various jobs at Wendy’s and all of the proceeds goes to the Miracle Fund.
As a fourth-year player, Will is a leader on the team and leads by example with his calm demeanour and steady play. The fourth-year human kinetics student uses his studies to help with his training for the links.
Consistently shooting in the low 70s (Shot 72 or under in 40% of his rounds played since Sept. 2011) will be tested once again as the southpaw will compete as an individual at this year’s PING CCAA Golf National Championship. The first of three rounds will have Will teeing off Wednesday, October 16 with the tournament closing ceremonies and awards to be presented on Friday, October 18 at 1 p.m. (PST).
