Writers included in Half in the Sun, an anthology of Mennonite writing in B.C., will be reading for The Lake: A Reading Series, a series sponsored by the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies (FCCS) at UBC Okanagan.
On Wednesday, April 11, at 7 p.m., writers Darcie Hossack, Robert Martens, Elsie Neufeld and Barbara Nickel will read from Half in the Sun at the Kelowna branch of the Okanagan Regional Library, 1380 Ellis St.
“Come to the downtown library for a great night of storytelling, local history and poetry,” says Nancy Holmes, UBC Okanagan Associate Professor of Creative Writing and one of the series organizers. She notes that the readings are open to all and admission is free.
The reading will be introduced by Dr. Lisa Grekul, UBC Okanagan Assistant Professor of English, who writes widely on ethnic literatures in Canada.
Hossack is a Kelowna writer who has twice placed in the Okanagan Short Fiction Contest.
Martens was born in the Mennonite village of Yarrow and now lives in Abbotsford where he has co-edited and contributed to a number of regional and ethnic histories.
Also from Abbotsford, Neufeld, who was the editor of Half in the Sun, is the daughter of Russian Mennonite immigrants, and she has written two non-fiction books, in addition to editing numerous memoirs and seniors’ anthologies.
Poet Barbara Nickel’s first book of poetry, The Gladys Elegies, won the Pat Lowther Award and she is also an award-winning author of books for children, living in Yarrow, B.C.
