Creative Writing students at UBC Okanagan will launch a truly unique publication on Tuesday, April 24, 7 p.m. at the downtown Kelowna branch of the Okanagan Regional Library.
“The anthology, Paper Shell 2007, will present new work from first- to fourth-year Creative Writing students,” says Professor Nancy Holmes, “but what makes this year’s anthology truly special is that every single copy of the book will feature a one-of-a-kind cover.”
Fourth-year student editors conceived of a project to make each copy of the book a unique work of art, says Holmes. They printed 100 blank covers and asked artists throughout the community to draw, paint, collage or design a cover.
Each of these covers will be used to bind the books. Artists include students and faculty from the Visual Arts program at UBC Okanagan, students from Kelowna Secondary School and artists from the art group at Canadian Mental Health Association, as well as other individuals.
The nearly 100 unique books will be displayed at the library on April 24. People wishing to purchase a book can buy a $15 ticket. Ticket numbers will be drawn randomly, so purchasers can choose a cover of their choice.
“We invite everyone to come hear the writers read, see the books on display and get your hands on a copy of a one-of-a-kind treasure,” says Holmes.
Refreshments will be served, and the event is free to attend. Tickets for a book may be purchased at the door or ahead of time by calling Linda Falkingham, Creative Studies Department Secretary, at 250-807-9761.
