Historic firsts celebrated during UBC’s Okanagan campus Convocation

June 9, 2011

Record number of graduates at ceremonies Thursday and Friday, June 9 and 10

Among the historic events at this week’s Convocation ceremonies at UBC’s Okanagan campus are the conferral of Bachelor of Human Kinetics degrees for the first time, and the conferral of a PhD upon  microbiologist Max Jones, whose doctoral degree is the first to be started and completed entirely at UBC’s Okanagan campus.

During a record five Convocation ceremonies Thursday and Friday, degrees are being conferred upon 1,174 students. At Thursday’s ceremonies an honorary UBC degree is being given to Kelowna businessman and community volunteer Brad Bennett.

This is the first time Convocation ceremonies are taking place over two days at UBC’s Okanagan campus, testament to the record number of graduates and growing enrolment.
