Engineering Week runs from March 3 to 9
Engineering Week is March 3 to 9 and UBC’s Okanagan campus School of Engineering has a variety of activities planned.
On Monday, March 5, the budding engineers will cook up a pancake breakfast from 7 to 9 a.m. in the common lounge of the Engineering, Management and Education building (EME1256.)
On Tuesday, March 6, electrical engineers challenge each other with a soldering race, to see who is the fastest and best at soldering wires.
Wednesday, March 7, will be the most smashing day of the event with the popular Car Smash. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. people can make a donation and work out some frustrations with a sledge hammer on a clunker car in the campus courtyard. Money raised from the event will help cover the costs of Engineering Week, with any remaining funds going to charity.
From 2 to 3 p.m., engineers will turn their attention to food with the Edible Car Contest. Participants will have to build a model car using only food items. The event will be held in EME foyer.
On Thursday, March 8, Engineers Without Borders (EWB) will host a fair-trade pancake breakfast in front of the Science building with all of the ingredients used coming from fair-trade organizations. Money raised from the event will go to EWB.
While it may still be food, the spaghetti used to build towers in the afternoon will likely not be edible. From noon to 1:30 p.m., the engineers will again take over the EME foyer where the Civil Engineer Club will hold a spaghetti structure building contest.
