Here are some professional development workshops for faculty and staff at UBC’s Okanagan campus over the next few weeks:

A virtual introduction to Blackboard

Interested in attending an overview of the Okanagan campus’ new learning management system from the home or office? This 20 minute online session will provide attendees with a brief overview of the following concepts.

  • What happened to WebCT Vista courses and how to get course content transferred to the new Blackboard system
  • How students access Blackboard courses
  • What online supports are available for new Blackboard users
  • The key Blackboard concepts needed to start placing content in Blackboard
  • Additional supports that are available

An internet-connected computer with speakers or a headset will be required to take part in this session. The web link for the workshop will be emailed to registered participants the day prior.

Dates: July 19 and Aug. 7

An Introduction to BEN

The School of Health and Exercise Sciences’ Nutrition Education Center is offering a new health promoting program for staff and faculty this summer.

BEN (behaviour modification, exercise and nutrition education) helps faculty and staff to facilitate healthy lifestyles and healthy weight through education and skill development.

  • July 26
    Five week goal setting and introduction to other body measures
  • Aug. 2
    Theraband and exercise
  • Aug. 9
    The psychology of weight loss
  • Aug. 16
    The role of dietary fat in weight control
  • Aug. 23
    Recipe modifications, taste testing and goal re-evaluation

Video production boot camp

This workshop is designed for faculty and staff members that want to incorporate video into their class curriculum, research, promotional, or archival tool kit. It will provide participants with a good understanding of the video production process, techniques, and equipment necessary to create high-quality videos.

Dates: August 7, 8 and 9
Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day
Location: Administration building, room ADM011

There is no charge to attend this workshop, but space is limited. To register, visit the Media Centre website.

Essential Administrative Skills Series: Microsoft Publisher 2010

Create, customize and publish print-ready brochures, newsletters, labels, e-files, and more. Work from templates or create your own design to produce professional-looking documents.

Dates: Aug. 7 and 9
Time: 1 to 4 p.m.
Location: Fipke Centre building, room FIP129
Cost: $200 (includes HST)

Faculty instructional skills seminar

This workshop is designed to enhance learning environment facilitation skills for new and experienced faculty members. The three-day experience will involve learning and applying instructional design in the creation of mini-lessons that will be taught to the group.

Learn to write learning outcomes, use common instructional techniques and resources, evaluate learning, develop lesson plans, give and receive constructive feedback, as well as increase confidence as an instructor.

Feedback will be provided and incorporated in further mini-lessons and peer evaluations.

Dates: Aug. 13 to 15
Time: 9 a.m. to 12 noon each day
Location: Library building, room LIB305
