In recognition of UBC Okanagan’s Diversity and Equity week, Sept. 29 to Oct. 5, the Disability Resource Centre wants everyone on campus to choose their words carefully.
Using words like retard and retarded is negative, discriminatory and abusive.
It’s disrespectful to use them in any context. Words like that have an impact on others’ experiences of UBC as a diverse and inclusive community.
It’s not a matter of political correctness. It’s a matter of respect.
