Congratulations to Terry Downs, who has just joined Campus Operations and Risk Management in the newly-created position of associate director of Risk Management Services.

“Terry has been a key member of the Enrolment Services team for the past year, serving as the manager of Student Services and Financial Support,” says Shelley Kayfish, director of Campus Operations and Risk Management.

“We now welcome Terry to our unit with great excitement. I am confident that her strong leadership and ability will bring the Campus Security with Risk Management Services teams together and ensure strengthened and sustained services with a focus on a safe and secure environment.”

Downs has 20 years of diverse industry experience in finance, emergency services and risk management — both in the private and public sector. She was instrumental in developing a narcotic detection canine program focused on traveling criminals and a community pet therapy program in partnership with school district officials and high-risk students, as a former serving member of the RCMP in Alberta.

Downs relocated to Kelowna in 2008 to work with local and inter-provincial governmental agencies on suspicious fire investigations using detection canines. She then took on the role of manager of risk and compliance for the aviation, marine and mining operations of a local mining development company.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to lead Risk Management Services for our campus,” says Downs. “It has been a pleasure working with the campus community in my previous role and I look forward to enhancing those existing partnerships across the campus as well as the greater community.”

Downs can be found in lower floor of the Library building by Central Receiving and Campus Mail. To find out more, connect with her at terry.downs@ubc.ca.
