Student leaders selected to help coordinate orientation and summer transition programs

Campus Life, International Programs and Services, Aboriginal Programs and Services and the Advising and Involvement Centre would like to give a warm welcome to a number of orientation and summer transition program coordinators this summer.

Leading different projects and programs, these students will work collaboratively during the summer to provide new-to-UBC students an outstanding experience at UBC Okanagan. From summer programs for scholars, to academic advice and orientation programs, new-to-UBC students have plenty of options to help them succeed.

Create and Kick Start Orientation Coordinators: Matthew Hoogveld and Nicholas Ross

As Kick Start assistants, both Matthew Hoogveld and Nicholas Ross have previously helped out-of-province students learn more about campus and Kelowna.

As Kick Start and Create coordinators, Hoogveld and Ross will be using their leadership experience to create welcoming and fun orientation experiences. Hoogveld will be organizing the Create New Student Orientation and Ross will be organizing Kick Start.

First-year Peer Advisor: Evelyne Kiiza

Kiiza is a third-year BA student who is pursuing a major in psychology. She will be helping new-to-UBC students with their academic transition to university and will be available from the end of May until the end of August.

Indigenous Summer Scholars Coordinator: David Lacho

David Lacho is being welcomed back as this year’s Indigenous Summer Scholars Coordinator.  The Indigenous Summer Scholars program provides Aboriginal middle school students an opportunity to engage in a holistic experience of university life.

Undergraduate Jumpstart Coordinators: Mirabelle Arodi and Alejandra Garcia

Mirabelle Arodi has worked as a residence advisor of the International Learning Community group, and hosted the annual Rejoice cultural show. Alejandra García has worked previously with International Programs and Services as a Jumpstart Assistant, welcoming international students to their new home away from home.

They will be applying their experiences to help organize Jumpstart, a week-long international student orientation program from August 31 to September 4.

Graduate Student Jumpstart Coordinators: Mahsa Haghjoo and Moein Ahmadipour

Mahsa Haghjoo and Moein Ahmadipour are engineering graduate students at UBC Okanagan. They previously worked as Jumpstart leaders in August 2014, welcoming all new international graduate students.

With their breadth of international experience, they will be helping new graduate students succeed in a totally new environment.
