Health promoting universities and colleges at UBC Okanagan this week

International charter signing on Thursday recognizes health promotion, wellbeing, and sustainability

What: International Conference on Health Promoting Universities and Colleges
Who: 400 delegates from 40 countries
When: Charter signing at 3 p.m. Thursday, June 25
Where: Arts and Sciences Centre ASC 140 lecture theatre, UBC Okanagan, Kelowna

More than 400 delegates from universities and colleges around the world are at UBC’s Okanagan campus this week to help develop new initiatives that will create healthier communities on their campuses and beyond.

The 2015 International Conference on Health Promoting Universities and Colleges is intended to mobilize the power and highlight the responsibilities of institutions of higher education to provide exceptional learning opportunities for students, to develop vibrant campus communities where everyone thrives, and to advance knowledge and practices relevant locally and globally to campuses and other communities.

The following session on Wednesday, June 24, is open to anyone interested in health, government and higher education partnerships to strengthen communities. Organizers point out that seating may be limited:

University/College and Community Cross-Sector Collaborations
Wednesday, June 24, 2015
3:30 to 4:45 p.m., in the Arts and Sciences Centre lecture theatre ASC 140

  • Successful Implementation of the Ottawa Charter Strategies in Balanga City: A Partnership of Local Government, University and Health
    Joet Garcia, Mayor of the City of Balanga, Philippines
  • Case Studies: Indigenous Communities and Higher Education
    Dr. Evan Adams, Chief Medical Officer of the First Nations Health Authority in British Columbia

The conference will conclude Thursday afternoon with the signing of a new international charter that recognizes the importance of health promotion, wellbeing, and sustainability in higher education and the community. UBC President Arvind Gupta will sign the new Okanagan Charter on June 25, at 3 p.m. in the Arts and Sciences Centre ASC 140 lecture theatre.
