International charter to be signed at UBC Okanagan, Thursday 3 p.m.

What: Signing of new Okanagan Charter at the International Conference on Health Promoting Universities and Colleges
Who: UBC President Arvind Gupta, international post-secondary institution delegates
When: 3 p.m., Thursday, June 25, 2015
Where: Arts and Sciences Centre ASC 140 lecture theatre, UBC Okanagan, Kelowna

This week, 400 people from universities and colleges around the world are at UBC’s Okanagan campus to help develop new initiatives that will create healthier communities on their campuses and beyond.

The 2015 International Conference on Health Promoting Universities and Colleges is intended to mobilize the power and highlight the responsibilities of institutions of higher education to provide exceptional learning opportunities for students, to develop vibrant campus communities where everyone thrives, and to advance knowledge and practices relevant locally and globally to campuses and other communities.

The conference will conclude Thursday afternoon with the 3 p.m. signing of a new international charter that recognizes the importance of health promotion, wellbeing, and sustainability in higher education and the community.

Thursday, June 25: Developing the Okanagan Charter

8:15 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., Arts and Sciences Centre ASC 140

  • Morning opening remarks by Arvind Gupta, President of UBC, and Cathy McLeod, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health (Government of Canada).
  • Keynote presentation: An international charter for changing campuses that change the world, with Trevor Hancock, University of Victoria

3 p.m.  Signing of international Okanagan Charter — Arts and Sciences Centre ASC 140

Expected to be among the first to sign the Okanagan Charter are:

  • UBC President Arvind Gupta
  • Okanagan College President Jim Hamilton
