National pharmacare policy focus of public discussion on Thursday

September 29, 2015

Event: Public discussion on national pharmacare policy
Date: Thursday, Oct. 1, 2015
Time: 3 to 4:30 p.m.
Location: Ramada Hotel, 2170 Harvey Ave., Kelowna

Steve Morgan, a professor with UBC’s School of Population and Public Health, will speak in Kelowna Thursday as part of a public discussion about national pharmacare policy.

Prescription drugs are so important in modern healthcare that the World Health Organization has declared that all countries are obligated to ensure universal access to them.

Mary Ann Murphy, associate professor of sociology and social work at UBC Okanagan, will introduce the discussion, titled Pharmacare: Making necessary care affordable for all Canadians.

The presentation and discussion will examine how universal, comprehensive, public pharmacare —working in conjunction with the universal medicare system — is the best way to ensure that all Canadians have equitable access to necessary medicines at an affordable cost to patients and society as a whole.

The event, 3 p.m. at the Ramada Hotel (2170 Harvey Ave.) in Kelowna, is hosted by the Okanagan Chapter of CARP, a national non-partisan, non-profit organization promoting social change, with support from Interior Savings Credit Union and marks the UN International Day of Older Persons — National Seniors Day — on Oct. 1.

Admission is free and all are welcome, but preregistration is encouraged. Register at:
