UBC Okanagan’s AlterKnowledge Discussion Series is highlighting the work of Wilfred and Pamela Barnes of the Westbank First Nation.
Wilfred and Pamela Barnes are dedicated to the revitalization of Syilx (Okanagan) language and culture within their family and the Syilx (Okanagan) community. They have been invited to initiate a discussion about these cultural practices by David Jefferess and Allison Hargreaves, UBC Okanagan professors who organize the AlterKnowledge Discussion Series.
“Wilfred and Pamela have been learning about and sharing Syilx cultural practices for many years,” Jefferess says. “This work reflects a tradition that goes back thousands of years and our discussion will focus on the importance of this wisdom today.”
The AlterKnowledge Discussion Series aims to bring people together to “discuss, share, and (un)learn.” This year, as part of the university’s Centennial celebration, the AlterKnowledge focuses on critical engagements with the way colonialism continues to shape relationships, identity, and place.
The discussion takes place Friday, December 11 and starts at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. It takes place at the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art in the Rotary Centre for the Arts on Cawston Avenue in Kelowna.
