Sita-Rani MacMillan has joined Enrolment Services in the newly created position of applicant services coordinator for UBC’s Okanagan campus. Her main focus will be on the implementation and ongoing operation of broad based admissions for undergraduate applicants. Sita relocated from the Vancouver campus where she was the aboriginal admissions officer at the Institute for Aboriginal Health within the College of Health Disciplines.
In that role she developed recruitment materials, provided retention initiatives to students and chaired the Aboriginal Admissions Committee with UBC faculty, staff, students and community members. She has received a BA from Thompson Rivers University and both a BEd and MEd from UBC.
Deputy Registrar Fred Vogt says that “Broad Based Admission is a revision to our traditional grades-only approach to evaluating applicants. By evaluating student responses to several questions included on the application form, we will combine an assessment of applicants’ grades with an evaluation of other factors, such as leadership and goal-setting. This process will require volunteers to read student profiles. Sita will be leading the way in building this group of volunteers, training them and ensuring that their evaluations are received and processed in good time. Obviously, Sita will be building many strong relationships on campus in a very short period of time and we are very happy to have her join us.”
“My passions and interests”, says Sita, “lie in supporting prospective students in achieving their educational goals, and providing a holistic admissions process is one way of doing so. I look forward to working with many of you in my new role here.”
