Susan Murch featured in Hawai’i breadfruit research documentary

February 9, 2012

A new video documentary produced by the Breadfruit Institute explores research to preserve breadfruit and expand its use in reforestation and as  a food staple throughout the tropics. Susan Murch, Canada Research Chair in natural products chemistry and an associate professor at UBC’s Okanagan campus, is one of the scientists working at the Breadfruit Institute, at the National Tropical Botanical Garden in Kalaheo, Hawai’i.

In the 15-minute documentary, Breadfruit — a tree of importance to Hawai’i, (11:50 into the video) Murch outlines research into the nutritional potential of breadfruit, and how this crop could address “hidden hunger” in parts of the world where people might have enough food, but it may be deficient in some of the nutrients they require.

“Breadfruit shows excellent potential for addressing hidden hunger in many parts of the world,” says Murch.
