UBC Okanagan’s AlterKnowledge Discussion Series is altering its location and going on a bit of a field trip.
Event organizers, UBC Asst. Prof. Allison Hargreaves and Assoc. Prof. David Jefferess, are hosting this week’s AlterKnowledge discussion at the Sncəwips Heritage Museum in Westbank. The theme of the evening will be a discussion about identity, relationship, and place through the lens of Syilx (Okanagan) heritage practices, explains Hargreaves.
“Museums foster vital public engagement with the living memory of a community’s heritage and knowledge,” she adds.
The evening begins with a brief tour of the museum space led by Curatorial and Heritage Researcher, and UBC Okanagan alumnus Jordan Coble. Once the tour is complete, participants will talk about the role played by heritage organizations in shaping public notions of history.
“We will also discuss what it means for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples to encounter these histories from the Sqilxw (First Nations) perspective,” says Hargreaves.
The AlterKnowledge Discussion series aims to bring people together to discuss, share, and (un)learn. This year, as part of the university’s Centennial celebration, the AlterKnowledge Centennial Series will focus on critical engagements with the way colonialism continues to shape relationships, identity, and place.
The evening at the Sncəwips Heritage Museum takes place Friday, November 20 and starts at 7 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. Directions to the museum can be found at: https://goo.gl/maps/vf3U11zctbk
